Abstract
This chapter gives an overall introductory statement for this book. The overview and motivation are first addressed. Traditional topology optimization methods that relate structural topologies with FE models, such as the density-based method, evolutionary structural optimization, and the level-set method, are briefly reviewed. An industrial application is given to show the necessity of feature-driven structural optimization. Literature studies are then made regarding feature-based modeling and design in the CAD community as well as feature-driven structural optimization. The generalized concept of shape feature is further outlined for the definition of design primitives in feature-driven structural optimization. The layout of this book is finally given to close this chapter.
