Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to concepts of power system dynamics, stability, estimation, and control. It also explores the state of the art and current research in power system estimation and control, including energy management systems, phasor measurement units, flexible AC transmission systems, wide-area measurement systems, wide-area control systems, dynamic state estimation, and dynamic control. Differences between static and dynamic estimation technologies and challenges to power system dynamic estimation and control are also discussed. Many of the technologies introduced in this chapter possess potential to not only strengthen but also revolutionize the control infrastructure of modern power systems.
