Abstract
This chapter describes how a web application works. The chapter also explains web hacking methodologies. A web application is broken up into several components. These components are a web server, the application content that resides on the web server, and typically a backend data store that the application accesses and interfaces with. This is a description of a very basic application. No matter how complex a Web application's architecture is, i.e., if there is a high availability reverse proxy architecture with replicated databases on the backend, application firewalls, etc., the basic components are the same. The components that make a web architecture are: the web server, the application content, and the datastore. In order to be a good web application hacker (or to be good at anything for that matter) a fundamental understanding must be obtained. It is highly recommended to undertake the task of learning, practicing, and tinkering.
