Abstract
The introduction to this guide provides a brief introduction to the topic of pneumatic conveying, within the overall subject area of bulk solids handling, to explain where and how it fits and the distinct advantage that pneumatic conveying has over alternative mechanical handling means of conveying bulk particulate materials. For this purpose, capabilities are reviewed in terms of flexibility of routing, industries served, materials handled, together with distances and tonnages possible. Specific advantages, such as total enclosure, inerting for explosive materials, multiple material handling, and vacuum conveying are explained. Potential operating problems with friable and abrasive materials are reviewed together with comparisons with regard to both capital costs and operating costs. A brief review of the various chapters is given and the nomenclature for analysis is given here. There is no escaping from mathematical analysis in this subject, whether designing systems or troubleshooting, and so it has been made very user friendly.
