Abstract

As part of the animal kingdom humans interact with several other animal species, establishing multiple interactions throughout their shared coexistence that has resulted in close connections of mutual interdependence. Whether for utilitarian or cultural value, animals have played a wide range of roles in human life since the earliest days of recorded history. In this way, fauna represents one of the subjects that have deeply interested humans, both informally and from an academic perspective. Naturally, due to the complexity of human–animal interactions, understanding them calls upon a variety of different academic disciplines, especially within the social and biological sciences. Ethnozoology, the theme of this book, arises as a discipline that can provide important contributions and serve as a bridge enabling dialogue between the different academic fields interested in this subject.
