Abstract

Heterocyclic compounds play an important role in many areas of life and science. Among the diversified heterocycles, imidazole and its derivatives are consigned as an exclusive and multifaceted scaffold due to its multiple applications in industrial, organic, and medicinal chemistry. Several elegant green protocols for the synthesis of imidazole and its derivatives have been developed over the last few years using various types of reagents and catalysts to improve selectivity, purity, and yield of the products. Thus, imidazole derivatives are recognized as potent scaffolds in the pharmaceutical industry, and diverse synthetic pathways have been developed to prepare its functionalized derivatives. The chapter includes various synthetic aspects of substituted, hybrid, and fused imidazoles using eco-benign pathways and shall pave a wide array for researchers to synthesize imidazole and its derivatives.
