Abstract

This chapter discusses linear partial differential equations of mixed type. It highlights the equation of the second order with two independent variables, and also discusses the theory of Cibrario. Because the type of an equation of the second order depends solely on the terms involving the partial derivatives of second order and the problem is precisely that of reducing to the simplest form a sum of such terms (the dominant part of the equation), it is natural to consider a more general equation. The chapter describes systems of two first-order equations. It also discusses linear systems of partial differential equations of the second order with two independent variables.
