Abstract
This chapter describes the basics and primary applications of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The operation of the six most popular versions of DSC is explained (power compensation DSC, heat flux DSC, Tian-Calvet calorimetry, modulated temperature DSC (MTDSC), fast scanning calorimetry, and differential photocalorimetry). Determination of specific heat capacity is treated with both traditional DSC and MTDSC. The sample preparation and calibration of DSC instruments are described in detail for heating and cooling modes. Characterization of glass transition, melting, and crystallization is described in depth. The chapter explains how to carry out DSC experiments. Special attention is paid to the effect of the surroundings on the DSC results. The specifics of measurements on liquid samples are discussed separately.
