Abstract

This chapter discusses the significant improvement experienced by the Dionysian cult, especially in the provinces of the Roman East, under the combined pressure of popular aspirations and imperial power exercised by the Antonine and Severi. It presents an overview on the Dionysian cult in the imperial era and some certifications. Variable dimensions theaters were built in the Syrian provinces in imperial times. Dusares is well attested as the main deity of the Northern Arabs, and several strong indications lead to see him as a god of vegetation. The chapter reviews the mysteries of the imperial triumph: symbolic functions and scenic representations of the Dionysian figure. Several elements can be concluded that some mythological episodes depicting the birth and childhood of Dionysus were particularly popular at the imperial era in Syrian provinces. The original text of the chapter is in French. Keywords: Dionysos; Dusares; god of vegetation; imperial cult; imperial triumph; mysteries; Syrian provinces
