Abstract

This chapter draws some contours of the organization of the imperial cult and its evolution in Syrian provinces by considering information delivered by numismatics, while using the knowledge gathered about the Greek competitions. The study of the real and symbolic relationship between the imperial cult and the goddess Nemesis confirms the role of intercession civic elites to populations. The figure of the imperial cult priest had easily take place in the civic and festive life of Syrian provinces for serving imperial celebrations, especially during games. The chapter presents an overview on the institutional and administrative framework of the imperial cult of the Syrian provinces. Most of the reorganization of the imperial cult took place during the reign of Hadrian. The title of Metropolis was often cited for the Syrian provinces and closely related to the celebrations of the imperial cult.
