Abstract

The Melnikov method is used to study the transition from a completely integrable classical potential scattering system to a non-integrable one. The authors investigate the heteroclinic bifurcations and prove the existence of arbitrarily many elliptic and hyperbolic periodic orbits in a bounded scattering region. For selected parameter values some of the analytical predictions are checked by numerical scattering experiments.
