Abstract

Abstract A theoretical investigation is made of chaos in planar aligned samples of non-chiral smectic C liquid crystals. Under the application of a suitable oscillating electric field it is possible to determine criteria for the onset of chaos by means of a Melnikov analysis. For any given smectic tilt angle θ the magnitudes and frequencies of the oscillating field which can induce chaotic instabilities in the c-director can be detected.
