Abstract

Tenancy, a system of farming wherein the owner of the land(Landlord) engages someone (tenant) to carry out agricultural operations is declining over the year. A ban in various forms was imposed on tenant farming. But the system is still prevalent in many states. Though fixed money leasing is increasing at a rapid pace, sharecropping is a predominant form among the various forms of tenancy. Through this paper, an effort has been made to understand the current status of tenancy in the country, comparing the input and output share between the tenant and the landowner in various states of the country. A peculiar type of sharecropping locally known as Bhagidari system of sharecropping is also studied, which is a very common practice being adopted by the farmers in the state.
