Abstract

1. 1. Blood sugar and pyruvate levels fell and blood lactate rose in response to hibernation. 2. 2. Significant decreases in total lipids occurred in winter. Total cholesterol and triglycerides levels did not change significantly. 3. 3. A significant decrease in serum protein concentration was recorded during hibernation. The considerable rise of total non-protein nitrogen (NPN), with an elevation of serum uric acid, a fall in urea, creatinine, ammonia and free amino acids levels indicate increased rates of protein catabolism in hibernating animals. 4. 4. The marked decreased of LDH, CK, GOT, GPT and AP activities in response to hibernation contributed to various functional impairments.
