Abstract

Previous studies of the humoral immune response at the mucosal level in Giardia lamblia infection have provided conflicting results and have not included measurements of IgE or IgD. We have measured the immunoglobulin-containing cells of all classes in the jejunal mucosa of 20 patients as compared with 25 controls, and in io patients after treatment. A significant increase in IgE ( P < 0·001) and IgD ( P < 0·005) cell numbers was found in the patient group. The raised IgE-cell count was reversible with treatment. After treatment a significant rise in IgA-cell numbers was found. The role of humoral immunity in giardiasis is discussed.
