Abstract

Nuclear parameters λ are extracted from published optical isotope and isomer shifts. To a good approximation, λ equals δ〈r2〉, the change in mean-square nuclear charge radii. Allowance is made for specific mass shifts. In most cases, screening ratios have been calculated by means of the Hartree-Fock method. The change of the electronic charge density at the nucleus is evaluated by means of empirical data as much as possible. Whenever feasible, λ is determined from isotope shifts measured in various electronic transitions as well as in different spectra of an element. Relative and absolute values of λ are given. All papers on isotope shift published up to the end of August 1986 have been considered as well as some preprints obtained thereafter.
