Abstract
The arrival of two university magazines in the spring and summer of 2007 has made very personal to me the changing of the guard in American education. The spring 2007 issue of the DePauw Magazine bore the news that my undergraduate academic advisor, Prof. Clifton J. Phillips, passed away March 20 in Greencastle at age 87. In the summer, Education Times: University of Florida College of Education Magazine carried the news of the passing of Prof. Arthur J. Lewis, my doctoral advisor, September 10, 2006, in Jacksonville at age 89. These coincident events brought back to me fond memories of the relationships I had with each, as they guided me through the tangles of growing up and making decisions about my future. Both were not only inspiring teachers in the classroom, but patient, interested, and insightful mentors outside of it. Both brought a wealth of experiences—many of them in the distant lands of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East—to our encounters, which greatly influenced my own journey in life.
