Abstract

Objective To explore the changes and diagnostic value of platelet's parameters in acute human brucellosis. Methods In this study, data of 58 patients with confirmed diagnosis of acute brucellosis (brucellosis group) in Ji'nan Central Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University from January 2014 to May 2017 and data of 58 healthy people (control group) were collected. Automatic blood analyzer was used to determine the platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet deposited (PCT), and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), then the diagnostic value of platelet's parameters was calculated by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Results Acute brucellosis patients had many symptoms: the most common symptoms were fever (89.66%, 52/58), fatigue (56.90%, 33/58), sweating (13.79%, 8/58), joints and muscle pain (27.59%, 16/58), cough (17.24%, 10/58), headache (12.07%, 7/58), abdominal pain (10.34%, 6/58), lower back pain (25.86%, 15/58), and urinary pain (6.90%, 4/58). PLT and PCT in patients with acute brucellosis were increased compared with those of control group, but the difference was not statistically significant [(225.00 ± 52.88) × 109/L vs (211.31 ± 90.30) × 109/L, (0.19 ± 0.09)% vs (0.18 ± 0.04)%, t = 0.98, 0.25, P > 0.05]; there was significant difference in PLR between the two groups [136.35 ± 85.79 vs 101.87 ± 53.08, t = 2.39, P 0.05); there was a negative correlation between MPV and PLR (r = - 0.214, P < 0.05). Conclusion The platelet's parameters change abnormally, which have reference value for diagnosis of acute brucellosis.
