Abstract

ABSTRACT Research question French amateur sports clubs are going through a transition in terms of their revenue sources and organisational structures. The changes necessary engender both risks, notably increased financial vulnerability, and development opportunities. The current study explored the development opportunities open to amateur sports clubs according to their current financial and structural situations. Research methods We conducted a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with administrators from 12 amateur handball clubs in the Nord département of France, thanks to support from the Nord Département Handball Association. Results and Findings Results enabled us to categorise the clubs according to their financial and structural situations and to analyse the determinants of these situations. Some clubs had the managerial skills needed to ensure their development and diversify their sources of revenue, thereby reducing their financial vulnerability. Conversely, other clubs were unable to develop because they lacked managerial skills and/or because they received limited support from their local authorities. Some of these clubs need help to reach a turning point, whereas others are not looking to develop further. Implications The present categorisation of amateur sports clubs’ financial and managerial situations can help sport organisations adapt the support they provide to each clubs’ needs.
