Abstract

The article reflects the challenges of contemporary public libraries regarding the accessibility of electronic books for users and the specifics of the electronic lending mechanism carried out through these institutions. The multitude of innovative social and economic benefits associated with largescale digital distribution and access to information are alarming signs that in the field of public access to the e-books the situation becomes difficult. The author analyzes the experience of the Municipal Library „B.P. Hasdeu” on the procurement and dissemination of e-books which are becoming an essential part in the development of the collection of most public libraries globally. At the national level, the library confirms the application of electronic lending procedures and the development of the electronic book collection, identified through its own experiences. However, the opinion of international specialized organizations (e. g. IFLA) highlights the need for negotiations with publishers and suppliers of e-books in terms of price, conditions of use and availability of content, offering solutions.
