Abstract

The in situ determination of nutrient species in natural waters presents a significant analytical challenge. This paper introduces some of the practical issues involved and suggests flow injection analysis as a suitable tool to provide high quality data with high temporal and spatial resolution. Two case studies, the determination of macronutrients (nitrate and phosphate) in catchments and the determination of micronutrients (iron) in open ocean waters are described to illustrate the capability of the flow injection approach.
