Abstract

Safety Cases are mandated in a range of industries, and this approach towards Safety Management has now been adopted in MoD Air, Sea and Land systems. The implementation of a goal (Risk) based approach at Platform level ultimately requires that a Platform Safety Case is the vehicle through which Platform safety is managed. This paper discusses why such an approach is considered to be advantageous, and identifies a number of areas in which a Platform-level Safety Case needs to draw from, and interact with, Equipment Safety Cases and Safety Assessments. The interactions between the Equipment and Platform-level Safety Management issues are discussed and a number of key requirements are identified that, in the view of the author, need to be fulfilled for the full potential benefits of a “living” Safety Case approach to be realised at Platform level within MoD.
