“Mathematics is the queen of the sciences and arithmetic the queen of mathematics,” proclaimed Carl F. Gauss, one of the world's greatest mathematicians, in 1856. In fact, number theory—the study of numbers—has been pursued both by famous mathematicians and by enthusiastic amateurs for centuries.
