Abstract

The nature of ozone layer depletion and the background leading to international regulatory controls and eventual elimination of certain chlorinated solvents were summarised in Part 1 of the paper. The second part provides an insight into the consequential severe problems facing the electronics industry (particularly with regard to defluxing printed circuit boards and cleaning precision parts) and the options available to it. In addition, both the short-term and the long-term collaborative actions being undertaken world-wide to assess and implement the non-CFC cleaning regimes are outlined.
