Abstract

The purpose of this work is to determine experimentally the strains and electric displacement associated with domain switching in PZT65/35. In particular, we measure independently the polar and lateral strains of an essentially cube specimen, viz. the results corresponding to the butterfly loops. The responses of the cube specimen are, of course, three dimensional. Comparison of the polar butterfly loop of the cube specimen to that of a disc specimen whose thickness to diameter ratio is quite small indicates that the responses of the disc specimen are also three dimensional. These results also suggest the presence of surface layer effects which are more prominent in the disc specimen.
