Abstract
Cerheptaric acid, detected in Cereus peruvianus (a crassulacean, acid-metabolism plant), has been identified as 3-deoxy- d- manno-heptaric acid or its enantiomer. The acid occurred in high abundance in the cactus material investigated and was isolated as a crystalline monomethyl ester of the (7→4)-lactone.
