Abstract
Using the centrifuge modeling technique, a series of reinforced lateral earth support model tests were performed to identify the possible failure mechanism, and to verify a limit equilibrium method of analysis for the stability of the system. Detailed descriptions are given concerning the building, testing, and monitoring of the centrifuge model testing. The results of the model study show good agreement with theoretical predictions based on a plasticity solution formulated for analyzing the reinforced lateral earth system. The information obtained from this research indicates that centrifuge model testing is a useful tool for investigating the stability of earth structures particularly in the absence of prototype failure records.
