Abstract

Problems and solutions presented in this chapter deal with the preliminary design of centrifugal compressors. They include finding the efficiency of a single-stage centrifugal compressor, finding nondimensional power function at the inlet of a centrifugal compressor impeller, computing the optimum rotational speed of a centrifugal compressor, determining basic dimensions of a centrifugal air compressor impeller, finding the rotational speed of a centrifugal air compressor, calculating the mass flow rate through a centrifugal air compressor, finding operational parameters of a centrifugal compressor with radial blades, computing the discharge of a centrifugal air compressor impeller with radial blades, determining basic dimensions and exit flow properties of a centrifugal compressor impeller, and carrying the preliminary impeller design for a centrifugal air compressor. Detailed discussions of various concepts behind the problems and solutions presented in this chapter may be found in Logan’s Turbomachinery: Flowpath Design and Performance Fundamentals, Third Edition, by Bijay K. Sultanian, published by Taylor & Francis in 2015.
