Abstract
Bilateral implants of testosterone propionate (TP) in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) reduced food intake in castrated male rats. Similar implants in the anterior hypothalamus-preoptic area or VMH implants of 5α-dihydrotestosterone propionate had no effect on food intake. Bilateral and unilateral VMH implants of estradiol benzoate also reduced food intake in these animals. These and previous results suggest that testosterone or its estrogenic metabolites act on central and peripheral sites to affect food intake in male rats. The physiological relevance of these effects is discussed.
