Abstract
What is presented here is an eminently personal narrative, of empirical character, about some field entries taken place in Manchester, Northern England, between February and May of 2015, in a broader investigation about local music scenes. We aimed at highlighting events and laterally-placed cases in relation to the mainstream of the hegemonic phonographic industry. It is therefore a discussion about independent rock, about social occurrences and acts of structuring happening underway in the underground circuit. The materials presented are ones which allow us to speculate also about the relations between urban imaginaries and produced (or fixed) memories by pop music. It is after all a discussion about tensions between the past and the present of alternative music produced in the area. Keywords: Manchester, music scenes, independent music, alternative rock.

Uma das primeiras boas impressões que tive, quando cheguei em Manchester, diz respeito à quantidade de material bibliográfico sobre música, crítica musical e, principalmente, sobre a cena local. Tenho a impressão de que são, em sua enorme, quase absoluta maioria, livros escritos por jornalistas, ao modo de história oral, muitas vezes, como catálogos de bandas, como anedotário, depoimentos pessoais ou como coleção de entrevistas com músicos e outros atores envolvidos nos episódios relevantes da vida musical de greater Manchester. Herron destaca os cenários emblemáticos no imaginário dos Smiths: Salford Lads Club, Ancoats, Manchester Central e Whalley Range..., descrevendo-nos, brevemente, a situação em que esses locais se encontravam no começo da década de 1980, o que a banda fez deles, tomando-os como ambientação a ser transfigurada musicalmente, e o que se tornaram hoje, objetos das políticas públicas de reordenamento imobiliário, das ações comunitárias, das retóricas e dos investimentos empresariais ou mesmo das sucessivas apropriações dos fãs de música pop. Esperamos que tais descrições possam se somar aos demais dados coletados, permitindo, ao final, alguma síntese conclusiva sobre as filiações identitárias, as tensões entre passado e presente na agitada cena de Manchester
