Abstract

The existence of previously reported hollow cement tubules has been confirmed for realistic water: cement ratios by utilising multiple electron microscope viewings (TEM, SEM, STEM) of the hydration products and noting their behaviour (damage etc) under a concentrated electron beam. However, microanalysis of these tubes along with selective phase hydration experiments show unambiguously that the “reverse-silica garden” mechanism cannot be solely responsible. A reinvestigation of the original silica garden experiment coupled with the microanalysis results indicate that a more complex chemical multi-phase system is operating in which rheological factors are also important.
