Abstract
Information on the ultrastructure and enzyme composition of the space between bacteroids and the peribacteroid membrane, the so-called peribacteroid space (PBS), in leguminous root nodules are presented. In the period of high nitrogenase activity nitrogen- and carbon-metabolizing enzymes were found in the PBS, whereas during senescence the activity of acid phosphatase was localized at peribacteroid membrane and in PBS. Thus, in the process of development of a nitrogen-fixing symbiotic system the enzyme pattern and the composition of PBS and its role were found to be changing.
