Abstract

The assumptions and a concepts involved in the use of organisms as bioaccumulators of metal ions are reviewed. Experiments arc described which use dual isotope methods to probe the mechanisms of metal ion uptake by the molluscan hepatopancreas. A number of new approaches to the interpretation of pollution data are proposed on the basis of these experiments together with some recommendations for future studies.
