Abstract
Since Mitchell showed that ATP-ase acts as a reversible proton carrier in mitochondria, several observations have focused attention on the existence of such proton-pumps in plant membranes [15, 18, 20]. These facts have opened new possibilities regarding the mechanisms of ion uptake and have led us to propose a new model for ion-absorption. We shall first review the main observations upon which the model is based and then check some of its consequences with results of other laboratories.
