Abstract
Receptors for neuronal and nonneuronal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; serotonin) are distributed throughout the autonomic nervous system (ANS), in sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons, the enteric nervous system (ENS), sensory afferent and central neurons regulating the ANS, and autonomic neuroeffector cells. 5-HT1A/1B/1D receptors mediate neuroinhibition in sympathetic, parasympathetic, and ENS neurons. Neuroexcitation is mediated by 5-HT2A/2C, 5-HT3, 5-HT4, and 5-HT7 receptors in sympathetic, parasympathetic, ENS, and sensory afferent neurons. 5-HT-induced effects in central ANS regulatory neurons may be mediated by 5-HT1A, 5-HT2, and 5-HT3 receptors. 5-HT1B, 5-HT2A/2B, 5-HT3, 5-HT4, and 5-HT7 receptors mediate 5-HT-induced effects on ANS neuroeffector cells.
