Abstract
The vegetative shoot apical meristem of seed plants isthe site of new leaf and stem formation. In the past few years genes that regulate fundamental aspects of shoot growth and development have been discovered. The recent study of these genes and their products through the use of appropriate mutants has opened new doors to understanding the molecular mechanisms of shoot apical meristem function.
