Abstract
Ionic liquids, composed of only ions, have unique properties such as very low melting point, high ionic conductivity, non-volatility, and thermal stability. These are ideal properties as electrolyte solutions for energy devices. However, component ions of the ionic liquids also move under the potential gradient. So that, special consideration should be needed for the design of electrolyte solution with target ion transport properties. Most ionic liquids are composed of organic ions, and a variety of derivatives have been designed for the functional liquids. With this wide variation or organic salts, many functional ionic liquids have been prepared for electrochemical applications. Strategies to design such functional salts with low melting point and high ionic conductivity have been mentioned.
