Abstract
The year 1978 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the equal parliamentary franchise for men and women in Britain, and a number of events were organised to celebrate this. The Fawcett Library mounted an exhibition in the Whitechapel Gallery; there was an official government- sponsored exhibition in Westminster Hall; and a commemorative event took place on the morning of 22 July, the actual anniversary of the Equal Franchise Act receiving the Royal Assent. This latter event in particular brought together a diversity of participants with different expectations. The retelling here of those celebrations is a work of personal reminiscence, and the author would be interested to compare his narrative with other people' recollections of these events.
