Abstract

The paper discusses the need for cave surveys, and sets out the four factors which should be considered at the planning stage of the expedition: objects, manpower, available time, and equipment. Gradings are considered within the context of the standards set by the British Cave Research Association, recommendations are made and suitable equipment suggested. The basic procedure is explained, and the relationship of the cave survey with the surface features is discussed. A list of essential equipment is given, plotting and presentation of the survey are described, and reference is made to the standards, terminology, and symbols as set down by the BCRA.
