Abstract
Looking for alternatives for the reuse of wastewater, the effect of the effluent of a plant ofWastewater Treatment, as a nutritive solution in a hydroponic system, was evaluated. Under greenhouse conditions at the Universidad Autnoma Chapingo in Mexico, an experiment wereinstalled and the cauliflower production was evaluated. The nutrient content and chemical quality ofthe effluent were evaluated. Three nutrient solutions were applied: effluent of the wastewatertreatment, mineral nutrient solution, and mixed nutrient solution (effluent supplied with mineralfertilizers), in a volcanic ash named tezontle, as inert substrate. Plant height, fresh and dry weight offoliage and inflorescence were evaluated at the end of the experiment. The highest values of thestudied variables were obtained with mixed and mineral nutrient solutions. The use of effluent, byproduct of wastewater treatment, decreases production costs of hydroponic solution and it allowsto recycle a waste material.
