Abstract

Some fluoride opal glass surfaces when exposed to the normal atmosphere selectively adsorb carbon dioxide and convert it to an organic compound. The organic compound was characterized and identified to be sodium formate. Probable reactions leading to the formation of the compound are proposed. These reactions have possible implications in the development of environmentally benign processes for synthesis of organic chemicals.
