Abstract
A catalytic photometric method for determining a nanogram level of vanadium(IV) and vanadium(V) is proposed. The method is based on their catalytic effect on the oxidative coupling reaction of 4-aminoantipyrine with N, N-dimethylaniline in the presence of bromate and sulfosalycilic acid. The vanadium concentrations as low as 10-9M can be easily determined by measuring the absorbance of dye formed at a fixed time. The reproducibility of the method is satisfactory with the relative standard deviations of less than 3% and there are few interfering ions. The method has been applied to the determination of vanadium in natural waters.
