Abstract

An experiment that has put the UK at the forefront of one of the fundamental problems in modern cosmology – the search for cold dark matter – is facing “severe difficulties” following a major cut in funding by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC). Peter Smith of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, the project's leader, says that the PPARC cut has forced the team to shed 5 of its 12 support staff – including two research associates – and to reduce its experimental budget from £360 000 to £120 000.
