Abstract

APROTININ IS A SERINE protease inhibitor that decreases the inflammatory response to cardiac surgery and reduces bleeding through its antifibrinolytic- and platelet-protective properties.1 It was discovered in the 1930s in Germany and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 for repeat coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery cases on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and in 1998 for first-time CABG surgery cases.
