Abstract

The article describes an attempt to modify already existing specialized maps with the aid of a geographic information system for the purpose of solving important problems involving the forecasting of emergencies. Considerable attention is devoted to an assessment of the nature of emergency situations and various factors contributing to their occurrence, as well as to methods by which information pertaining to such situations can be incorporated into geographic information systems. Principles governing the organization and functioning of a GIS for the forecasting of emergencies and disaster relief are described as well.
