Abstract

URING the early months of I793 France was preoccupied with LI revolution and war. Neither issue was particularly new-the Revolution was in its fourth year, and since April 20, I792 war had existed between France and Austria-but the execution of Louis XVI on January 2I, I793 had increased the tempo of both. Royalists and traditionalists within France were shocked by that event, and shortly thereafter the list of France's antagonists included England, Holland, and Spain. Prussia had already entered the war in support of its ally, Austria. Among the persons aggrieved by the execution of Louis XVI was General Charles-Frangois Dumouriez, the commander of the French army in Belgium. Dumouriez had served Louis XVI as a minister in I792 and, while on leave in Paris in January I793, had worked indefatigably to save the king's life.
