Abstract

To care effectively for a person with haemorrhoids requires an understanding of the causes of haemorrhoids, the treatment options and the associated care. This article provides insight into the many potential causes of haemorrhoids and also highlights the possible treatment options that may be available. A brief overview of the gastrointestinal tract is provided. This discussion emphasizes the need to assess each person individually and to offer care to people that is respectful and compassionate while offering assistance for a condition that could be a cause of embarrassment for the person. A glossary of terms is provided.
