Abstract
A physician identifies fear of contracting AIDS as a destructive element in the relationship of physicians and nurses with patients with AIDS. Rogers believes that fear of contagion, coupled with feelings that homosexuals and drug abusers are to blame for their disease, has affected the quality and outcome of patient care. The traditional "samaritanism" of medicine has been replaced by a "guarded, almost adversarial mind set." Health professionals need to find some way to repair the damage done to the bond between care-giver and patient by their initial response to the AIDS epidemic.
