Abstract

Within the discipline of nursing, two main areas of philosophical inquiry include ontology and epistemology. The purpose of this article is to examine nursing ontology and epistemology and to encourage further philosophical discussion within the discipline, in particular, to describe, distinguish between, and provide not only further philosophical discussion but an argument for nursing ontology and epistemology, respectively. The author's argument for nursing ontology is nursing is caring, while the epistemological argument is esthetic knowing is the knowledge of nursing practice.
