Redundancy among white collar workers is now more commonplace than it was, say ten years ago, and the highly qualified are having to come to terms with it. At the depths of economic gloom in 1971–2 the Social Science Research Council agreed to finance a study of redundancy among the highly qualified by social scientists at Heriot–Watt University (see Physics Bulletin April 1973 p205).
